GNT enthralls with a virtual concert in tribute to the Peruvian-Canadian friendship

“VALICHA” – National Children’s Choir of Peru

The Grand National Theater of the Ministry of Culture and the Embassy of Canada in Peru presented on July 1, a virtual concert with Peruvian and Canadian works performed by the National Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Julian Kuerti as a special guest), the outstanding violinist Lara St. John, and the National Children’s Choir of Peru.

The gala was broadcast through the “GTN En Vivo” web platform and the Facebook account of the National Grand Theater, as part of the activities scheduled for the national holidays of Canada (July 1) and Peru (28-29), countries which have maintained strong ties of friendship and cooperation for 75 years.

The program included traditional compositions of Canadian culture such as “I’s the B’y”, “À la Claire Fontaine” and “Alouette” and the Peruvian classics “Valicha” (Huayno-Sierra), “La Concheperla” (Marinera-Costa), and “Noa Nomabo” (Shipibo-Selva). The premiere of the piece “Czardashian Rhapsody”, by the violinist Lara St. John and the National Symphony Orchestra of Peru; and the opening of Ludwig van Beethoven’s opera “Fidelio”.

Maestro Julian Kuerti, a Toronto native, is the son of pianist Anton Kuerti and cellist Kristine Bogyo. He has been principal conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the University of Concepción (Chile) and guest conductor of the Orchester Symphonique de Montréal (Canada), Vasteras Sinfonietta and Svenska Kammarorkestern Orchestra of Sweden, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern of Germany, Michigan Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra (United States), Sydney Symphony Orchestra (Australia), Stavanger Symfoniorkester from Norway, Santa Cecilia Orchestra from Madrid (Spain), National Symphony Orchestra of Peru, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (Netherlands), Aarhus Symphony Orchestra of Denmark and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra of the United Kingdom.

For her part, the violinist Lara St. John, who is a virtuoso who has played together with symphony orchestras from Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver (Canada), the Zurich Chamber Orchestra (Switzerland), Orchestre de Chambre de Paris (France), Belgrade Philharmonic (Serbia), Amsterdam Symphony (Netherlands), Hong Kong Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony (Japan), Shanghai Symphony (China), Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra (Venezuela), and Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra (Brazil).
