Canada and the APEC 2022 Leaders' Declaration

On November 18, at the APEC 2022 Economic Leaders' Meeting, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed Canada's commitment to open economic cooperation and removal of trade barriers in the Indo-Pacific region to benefit people on both sides of the Pacific. He also announced nearly $170 million in new funding for the Indo-Pacific region, including investing in Canadian government offices, to “deepen” trade ties and defend Canadian interests in the region. Trudeau pledged to work with his counterparts to drive climate action and economic growth.

The Economic Leaders continued the implementation of the APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040: an open, dynamic, resilient, and peaceful Asia-Pacific community by 2040, for the prosperity of all their people and future generations.

We look forward to APEC 2023, which will be hosted by the United States of America, and welcome Peru and the Republic of Korea as hosts of APEC 2024 and 2025, respectively.

Voices of the Future APEC 2022
Voices of the Future 2022: Youth Delegates on the Needs of a Generation

Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha received a joint declaration from more than 100 APEC Voices of the Future delegates with whom he met on Nov 14th. Reflecting the views of the youth sector, the declaration highlights issues that are important to our younger generation.

The bio-circular-green (BCG) Economy concept, introduced by Thailand, emphasizes a whole-of-society approach: what government, business, academia, and youth can do to ensure a balanced, sustainable, and inclusive future for their generation and beyond.

This renewed focus on inclusion and the environment has made 2022 a landmark year for putting youth concerns and priorities front and center. Both issues are of extremely importance to our youth who are more than aware that they will inherit a highly unequal and environmentally damaged world.
