On July 19, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, Ambassador Ana Cecilia Gervasi deposited with the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the instrument of acceptance of the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies, being the 1st Latin American country to do so. Peruvian Fashion shined at CIFF 2023!

PromPeru led a delegation of ten leading Peruvian clothing and decoration brands leaving their mark at the prestigious Copenhagen International Fashion Fair (CIFF 2023) from August 9 to 11. This milestone marks the first time Peru, under PromPeru's Trade Office in Rotterdam, will have a presence at the event.

The showcased collections boasted a unique fusion of ancient Peruvian culture and modern sustainable practices. Fashioned from locally sourced and biodegradable materials like cotton, alpaca fiber, toquilla straw, shiringa, and paiche (fish) leather, these exclusive creations pay homage to tradition while embracing innovation.

This initiative serves as a decisive response to escalating environmental consciousness in both consumer and corporate spheres, solidifying Peru's role in shaping a greener fashion future.

ALPACA del PERU stands out at the international fair in China

The quality of Peruvian alpaca fiber continues to conquer the specialized markets of the world.
On this occasion, more than 100 samples of this material were presented at the prestigious China International Cashmere and Wool Exhibition, held in Ordos, north China, from July 21 to 23.

7 Peruvian brands displayed their best designs at the event, capturing the attention of different investors from the Asian region. The participation of the national exponents was thanks to the efforts of the PROMPERU office in Beijing, and the support of the local government of Inner Mongolia. Specialists from this Continent had the opportunity, for the first time, to verify the fiber and softness of Peruvian alpaca garments in direct contact, recognizing the quality of this Peruvian product and the differences between this natural fiber and cashmere.

Likewise, the presence of Peru in this fair contributes to the promotion of our country as the main producer of alpaca fiber and reaffirms our commercial relations with China. In this way, links continue to be built for the nation's economic growth.

Meta reveals CM3leon and AudioCraft, generative AI tools based on text

On July 14, Meta launched CM3leon, a generative AI tool capable of generating an image from a text and vice versa. Meta notes that CM3leon is better than some other tools such as Parti from Google, but doesn't mention the most popular toolsMidjourney or Dall-e from OpenAI.

And on August 2, AudioCraft was launched, allowing users to create music and sounds from zero with text-based input. Facebook users can install AudioCraft. The models are available for research purposes and to further people’s understanding of the technology. Meta invites Researchers and Music Professionals to use it, so they can train their own models with their own datasets for the first time and help advance the state of the art.

AudioCraft is the result of a combination of 3 AI generative models: MusicGen (text input to create music), AudioGen (same for sounds), and EnCodec (to improve the perceived quality of audio on both). Some artists have embraced these tools to be more creative, others have criticized copyright infringements, as posts on TikTok have used AI versions of their voices to create deepfakes.

OECD-Employment-Outlook-2023
OECD Employment Outlook 2023 - AI and the Labour Market

The 2023 edition examines the latest labour market developments in OECD countries. It focuses on the evolution of labour demand and widespread shortages, as well as on wage developments in times of high inflation and related policies. It also takes stock of the current evidence on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the labour market.

Progress in AI has been such that, in many areas, its outputs have become almost indistinguishable from that of humans, and the landscape continues to change quickly, as recent developments in large language models have shown. Combined with the falling costs of developing and adopting AI systems, suggests that OECD countries may be on the verge of a technological revolution that could fundamentally change the workplace.

While there are many potential benefits from AI, there are also significant risks that need to be urgently addressed, despite the uncertainty about the short- to medium-term evolution of AI. This edition investigates how to get the balance right in addressing the possible negative effects of AI on labour market outcomes while not stifling its benefits.

Generative AI and ChatGPT in Higher Education - Highlights
By Leslie Lopez.

A sincere thank-you to our brilliant panelists William Dick and Amir Ghazinoori, and to all who attended our first fireside chat on Generative AI and ChatGPT in Higher Education on July 14th.
Here there are the highlights from our conversation:

  1. We are beginning a big transformation that will bring risks and unintended consequences.
  2. As users of AI tools, we must understand how they work and their limitations to avoid being over-optimistic about their intelligence.
  3. As users, we are responsible for bringing real intelligence to using AI and Generative AI tools.
  4. In educational institutions, educators need to develop components across all courses and frameworks to teach students how to use these tools correctly. We cannot stop the use of generative AI. Educators need to figure out "how to use it."
  5. Legal liabilities are starting to arise because of wrongdoings caused by the indiscriminate use of AI. People using ChatGPT must be clear that they are largely responsible for the content generated using these tools...
