The Essential Life Support Areas (ELSAs) are defined as areas that together conserve critical biodiversity and provide humans with essential ecosystem services, such as carbon storage, food, fresh water, water filtration, and disaster risk reduction.
The project is promoted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and will be implemented in Peru, with geospatial data being collected in Ucayali region.

Challenges of operating in the mining industry, COVID and way forward

Kuno Kafka, Executive Director & Senior Counsel at Antofagasta Minerals Canada, is responsible for Antofagasta Minerals’ Canadian office and represents the company here in Canada. From his office, Kuno advises the company on its international exploration and business development ventures, also overseeing the legal and compliance aspects of the company’s activities abroad.
Mr. Kafka thinks it may be too soon to say how COVID-19 will impact mining operations. “Antofagasta has been fortunate enough to continue with its core business even during this crisis, although we had temporarily suspended many non-core activities. This pandemic is not over yet, and we need to remain cautious”, Mr Kafka expressed.
“This sudden and unexpected challenge, brought by COVID-19, has also shown us that we can be very adaptable and that there are many opportunities to be efficient through innovation. Remote working and automation are good examples.”, he added.
