Cloud Technologies: Meet the allies in the energy sector in Peru

The more efficient use of the various sources of renewable energy, the optimization of operational processes, and the role that the end customer assumes every day, have become the main benefits of the use of cloud computing technologies in electricity companies, said Guillermo Bustamante, Consulting and Design Director of InterNexa in Peru.

Bustamante pointed out that many companies are digitalizing and the energy sector is no exception: “the great advantage of using cloud services platforms like thunder®, our own 100% Peruvian cloud, is traceability, the process of evolution without losing information and detecting errors in real-time.”

The analysis techniques make it possible to predict, with the highest precision, both the demand for electrical energy and the possibility of generating electricity from renewable sources.

Likewise, “the cloud platform THUNDER®, from InterNexa, installed in Lima within a Tier III datacenter, recognized by the Uptime Institute, offers high availability and gives companies elasticity and scalability to implement Smart-Metering techniques. It facilitates the measurement of electricity consumption in real-time using Internet of Things devices”, he added.

The development of intelligent electrical grids or Smart Grids, which are already applied in Peru in different projects in the sector, allow the integration of ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) with the provision of energy on the electrical network, paving the way for interconnected services.

“Years ago there were many barriers to the implementation of cloud services in the sector for aspects such as security and privacy of information. Perception has changed and companies are working with platforms like thunder®, which has an essential disaster recovery plan (DRP) to safeguard information in the event of a contingency. In addition, we offer security support on the network that prevents us from being vulnerable by a cyber-attack”, added Bustamante.

The manager highlights the implementation of cloud systems that would allow us to be part of smart cities in the future. “Zurich and Singapore rely on technology, staying at the forefront. Without going too far, Chile is the only Latin American country that is a little more advanced with this trend. We must continue working to implement innovation in public services. Smart electricity grids open doors to modern and sustainable cities”, he declared.

A study mentioned in the magazine Smart Energy International indicates that the adoption of cloud technologies by energy companies has gone from 45% three years ago, to more than 70% today. “Cloud systems are definitely essential for business continuity. Customers around the world are constantly evolving and companies must update their operations to remain in force, “he concluded.
